Dunedin Consort treat audiences to 'Acis & Galatea'

06 November 2008

On the 3rd November Dunedin Consort released their new recording of Handel's ‘Acis & Galatea'. To celebrate the launch of this work the group performed in Haddington on Tuesday the 4th November and they will perform in Edinburgh's Queen's Hall on the 6th and Glasgow University's Chapel on the 7th November.

The concert in St Mary's Church in Haddington proved a great success with the consort indulging the audience in an atmospheric performance of the pastoral entertainment. In addition to ‘Acis & Galatea' the group will also perform the world premiere of Bill Sweeney's ‘Songs of Connacht' in the Queen's Hall - a performance not to be missed...

To add to the excitement the first review of ‘Acis & Galatea' has been published by McAlister Matheson Music. "It [‘Acis & Galatea'] combines wonderfully characterised solos and exquisitely balanced chorus singing. Susan Hamilton portrays the nymph Galatea in the purest tones; Matthew Brook's comically repulsive, lecherous giant Polyphemus could not be more of a contrast. His attempt at wooing Galatea (O ruddier than the cherry) puts Bryn Terfel's version firmly in the shade." The full review can be read in the reviews section here.
