Preview Praise for Claire Martin at Ronnie Scott's
01 September 2008
A host of superlatives met forthcoming dates in broadsheet previews for Claire Martin at the legendary Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London.
Marking the release of The Early Years Anthology and the re-release of Perfect Alibi, these pieces galvanise her position at the top of the UK jazz vocal ladder:
The finest jazz singer this country has produced in the past decade Clive Davis, The Times
Then, this superb assessment of her current standing:
After she'd opened the show for the American jazz vocals star Kurt Elling at the Barbican last year, Elling lost no time in leading the applause for the UK's Claire Martin, who had put the audience in just the frame of mind to understand what creative jazz singing is all about. Later in 2007, Martin was also one of the most personable and inventive contributors to a London Jazz Festival Ella Fitzgerald tribute- all confirmation of why the London-born, Betty Carter-inspired singer is admired as much by her singing peers - from Noel Gallagher to Mark Murphy - as by audiences. Aside from the technical control which lets her shift from deep purr to coolly loping swing in a blink, Martin is also a designer of unusual repertoires - her set on the Elling show included Michael Franks' coolly hip Jive and Sting's St Augustine In Hell. Martin has been collecting jazz awards since the mid 1990s, but her confidence has never been greater. John Fordham, The Guardian
Claire Martin will perform at Ronie Scott's on Monday 1st, Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd September, 2008.
