James MacMillan wins at the British Composer Awards 2008
04 December 2008
James MacMillan has been presented with the Liturgical Award at the 2008 British Composer Awards. Four motets from the composer's "The Strathclyde Motets", which were recorded for Cappella Nova's ‘Tenebrae', were announced as the winner of the Liturgical category at the prestigious ceremony which was hosted by the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters at the Law Society, London on the 2nd December 2008. The British Composer Awards highlight the richness and diversity of composition in Britain, celebrating dynamic and innovative talents.
‘Tenebrae' was released by the Scottish group, Cappella Nova, in November 2007 to great critical acclaim. Following the release it received several outstanding reviews in addition to a Gramophone Editor's Choice Award where the reviewer commented "...the duty of reviewing was never anything but a pleasure". Meanwhile the Financial Times called it "...undeniably beautiful..." and The Times stated "...the beautiful writhing counterpoint reflects contemporary spiritual wrangling..."
Cappella Nova are renowned for their beautifully atmospheric live performances, so why not get in the festive spirit and hear them in their ‘Carols by Candlelight' concerts. The group will be bringing old favourites and delightful new seasonal songs (and mulled wine and mince pies!) to Glasgow on the 19th December, Edinburgh on the 20th and the Brechin Arts Festival on the 21st December.
