New York Times interview Barb Jungr
05 September 2008
Barb Jungr is presently in New York performing a series of dates at The Metropolitan Room. She returns following a sell-out residency there earlier this year and, on this occasion, it is recognised in The New York Times, who have published an in-depth interview with her.
The piece, written by Stephen Holden, starts by stating, "to describe the mesmerizing British entertainer Barb Jungr as a cabaret singer would be as simplistic as calling Bob Dylan a folkie."
The article goes on to ask her about the current album Just Like a Woman (hymn to Nina). She reflects on Nina Simone and her often volatile approach saying that, "there's something about anger that powerful that I find inspiring. It's the opposite of the show must go on. The attitude is, ‘I'm so angry I don't give a damn if I lose everything.' "
Describing her musical sensibility as one which "transcends geographic as well as stylistic boundaries" the article recognises the scope of her influences.
With regard to her fan base, the piece goes on to state that "her New York following is not a stereotypical cabaret audience...but closer to the mature rock audience for performers like Randy Newman or Leonard Cohen."
Going on to examine her family background and her unique approach to songs as well as her career to date, Jungr openly states that "performing is what works for me. It's what gets me through. I don't think people need to hear any of this, but they can hear it in my voice. They can tell."
Barb Jungr performs at The Metropolitan Room, New York 4 September 2008 to 5 September 2008, 11 September 2008 to 13 September 2008 and 18 September 2008 to 20 September 2008.
