Barb Jungr Interviewed in The Irish News

23 September 2008

Following a hugely successful stint in New York where she played sell-out dates at The Metropolitan Room, Barb Jungr returns to UK shores with a highly-anticipated concert at The Speigeltent in The Belfast Festival, Northern Ireland.

Interviewed in The Irish News, the feature majors on her latest album Just Like a Woman (hymn to Nina), her career to date and events in her personal life which have shaped her work.

Writer Trevor Hodgett focuses on the track Angel of the Morning, which he describes as "one of Jungr's greatest performances on the album". Jungr describes the song, which has become a staple in her live shows, as "a tragic, sad song about the acceptance of abandonment".

The feature goes on to describe the influence of the Masters degree she studied in ethnomusicology on her career as well as her work for The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture. "My father came to Britain after the War as a refugee, so I grew up around people who were displaced and somehow my own experience, coupled with my profound sadness at our lack of humanity, led me to that charity" she states.

Of the current show, which features reworkings of songs sung by the late Nina Simone, Jungr says "When you hear it sung live, the work comes to a new life. People everywhere have been loving it. It's a very exciting show and uplifting. People leave with smiles on their faces".

Barb Jungr plays The Speigeltent, The Belfast Festival on Sunday 19 October, 2008.
